On June 2nd 2010, the close knit communities in West Cumbria, England, were rocked when a gunman shot and killed 12 people during a terrifying killing spree.
The gun-wielding man was 52 year old Derrick Bird, a local taxi driver. Derrick Bird had no previous history of violence and everyone who knew him was convinced the police had got it wrong.
This episode discusses the massacre as it unfolded and explores what might have caused Derrick Bird to snap and commit the most horrendous crime Cumbria has ever seen.

Between June 2011 and January 2012 Stepping Hill Hospital in Manchester, England, was plagued by a string of unexplained deaths and poisoning attacks on the patients being treated there. The attacks seemed to happen at random and patients were falling ill at all times of the day and night. The staff were confused as to why these patients were falling ill, but then they found a contaminated bag of saline…
This episode explores the attacks that happened at Stepping Hill Hospital and goes into detail about each of the victims of this crime. We discuss what happened when the police first made an arrest and the subsequent investigation that followed.

In 1981, 13 year old Mary Day went missing from her home in Seaside, California. Her family never reported her missing and her siblings were told to never speak about Mary to anyone.
In 1994, 12 years after the last time Mary had been seen alive, her disappearance was finally reported to the police. Nothing happened in this case until November 2003, when a routine traffic stop in Arizona uncovered something nobody had ever expected to find.
This episode looks into the police interviews conducted with Mary’s parents and explores what happened when police made that shocking discovery in Phoenix, Arizona.

On Sunday August 15th 2010, just outside Iceland’s capital city of Reykjavík, a young 23 year old woman entered the home she shared with her fiancé, Hannes, having spent the night out with a friend. Inside the house she found Hannes laying dead on the floor in a pool of blood.
This episode explores how the police caught his killer, despite there being no evidence at the crime scene. We discuss what led his murderer to commit this crime and we talk about how the initial trial left Hannes’s family without the justice they wanted.

On May 2nd 2005, the police in Aigues-Mortes, a city in the south of France, received a strange phone call from a man claiming that he knew a kidnapping of a young woman was about to take place at a lively Bar in the city centre.
The police were quick to rush to the Bar, but they didn’t see any crime take place and so the investigation was closed.
This episode explores the events that unfolded when a man walked into a police station 130km away in Marseille, claiming that his wife had disappeared. We discuss the disappearance of Élodie Morel as it unfolded and talk about how the perpetrators in this crime were eventually caught.
